The former battlefield in Overloon is the location of the first museum in Western Europe about World War II. It already opened its doors on 25 May 1946, making 2021 the year of the museum’s 75th anniversary.
The museum shows interactively the huge impact World War II had and how it mainly affected ordinary people. A visit to the museum will make you think about the resistance, D-day, the Holocaust and the liberation.
The exhibition “The Netherlands in World War II” takes you back in time and makes you part of the personal stories behind it. What would you do: Wait, collaborate, or resist?
The enormous military hall with more than 150 vehicles, ships and aircrafts has a special focus on the Battle of Overloon. There is a lot to see. Everyone should think about it more often that freedom cannot be taken for granted. Or, to put it short: War belongs in a museum.
The War Museum is also part of the cycling route ‘On the other side.’ Cyclists on the main road can catch a glimpse of the exhibition for free as this is the only museum in the world with a bicycle bridge going right through it.
During your cycling tour, the app helps you experience six war stories with realistic films, including the story about the foundation of the War Museum in Overloon. Ride that route, watch the films, and read the story atwww.venrayremembers.nl.
